You sat outside the back door in the garden to wait for Oliver. You sighed and thought about what happened to Lin. You hoped in your heart she was okay. She might have been strange, but she was so nice.

Oliver came out with one his signature smiles, pleasant with a touch of crazy. He handed you the purse you had when he had taken you captive. “I brought this out as well, in case you wanted to purchase anything or whatnot.”

“Um, thanks…” you sigh.

“Now _____, you need to behave while we’re in the store, don’t even try to run off. Even if you do, the spell binds us so I can sense where you would be, and I will find you.”

“B-binds us?!”

“When I bit you the first time, I injected my saliva into your bloodstream witch activated the spell that was in the cupcake. That’s why Chiku attacked Lin, he was just completing the spell.”

“You’ve never even told me what the spell even does!”

“You’ll find out very soon.” Oliver grinned evilly. He walked over to his bright pink moped and got on. “Come along sweetie.” He called patting the seat behind him. You glare at him a minute then swung your leg around on the scooter and sat down.

You slithered your arms around him with slight disgust, but if you didn’t you would have fallen off. Oliver glanced back at you with a smirk then started the pink machine. Although you couldn’t see it, you could still feel Oliver wrap his skinny tail around your waist. You sigh quietly as the two of you take off onto the road.

After a little while of a really enjoyable ride, Oliver pulled into a parking lot of a store you’ve never seen before. He parked and helped you off. Some people were giving the two of you strange looks and others didn’t even blink in your direction.

Oliver grabbed a trolley and wasted no time to pick you up and place you in it.

“I can walk you know.” You tell him with irritation.

“Yes, but you’ll attract less attention this way.” He told you.

“Attract attention?! Who’s the one here wearing bright pink with a neon blue tie?!”

“Look to your left, then tell me whose garb attracts attention.”

You looked over and soon regretted it, because you got a wonderful eyeful of a blond man wearing a pink shirt with a pure white jacket and blue scarf. On his face was rose shades, and a white cat with tan blotched was holding onto his neck, as if it was getting a piggyback ride. The way the man walked, you would’ve thought him to be a fashion model or something.

“You’re looking fabulous today Flavio, as always. Antonio looks well too.” Oliver smiled pleasantly at the man.

The man turned to the two of you and grinned “Thanks Ollie! Oooh, who you got there?” he walked over to you two and scratched your head. “She’s adorable.”

“_______, this is Flavio, and the little guy on his neck is Antonio.” You looked up to the mostly white cat that seemed to have a big smile and had his eyes closed contently. You noticed that Flavio and the cat had matching cross necklaces, except the cat’s was a choker.

“Well, we only came for some milk, so we’ll see you later sweetie!” Flavio smiled as he waved at you two. Once he was out of hearing range you turned to Oliver.

“Hey um, is Flavio…uh…”

“To be honest, none of us are sure. He does seem the type though, right?”

“What? No, I meant if he was your kind.”

“I’m not into- oh! Oh, sorry, yeah, he’s one of us. Kind of scary, isn’t it?” [If you couldn’t tell, he thought you were asking if Flavio was gay… and if Oliver ‘liked’ him.]

You were now in the store and soon realized that about half the people in the store had a cat with them, though there were a few dogs as well. “What kind of grocery stories this?” you ask.

“Our kind. The shop owner is one of us, and has therefore made it completely friendly to us and our pets. There are some humans wandering around here, but the majority is us.”

The store was an awful lot like a Wal-Mart, food, cloths, and other essential needs were neatly set around. You looked around nervously, unable to tell who was human, and who was the strange species.

“Pick out something you like.” Oliver told you as he drove the trolley over to the cloths section. “Do you want a dress? I think you’d look lovely in a dress!”

“Maybe later Oliver, I just want to get out of here.” You told him as you avoid getting looks from others in the store. Your eyes, glanced at a dark red dress and you shuddered. It reminded you of the bloodstained one you found in Oliver’s closet.

“Love, I promise no one will hurt you here. This store is where there is a permanent ceasefire between our species, like Switzerland. If anything this is probably the safest place for you. Besides, the store owner Mr. Wang owes me several favors, so do you want a dress or not?”

You wound up trying on three or four just to humor him, and if you had no complaints of any of them, he put it in the basket. Now the two of you were walking down the grocery isle with three casual dresses in the cart (along with yourself).

You turned the corner and saw the familiar face of Louis. Oliver called him over and they began to talk. Your attention was directed to the shy looking white cat in his basket.

His violet eyes met yours and he looked at you curiously. In his right ear was a chain of three piercings, matching the one in Louis’ ear. On his head was a strange long hair with a loop in it. As you began to reach your hand out to pet his head, he also reached out a paw. Your palm met his pads, but instead of a little kitty foot, it felt like regular sized hand. You both retrieved your limbs quickly with confusion.

“Oliver…”

“One minute love.” He finished his sentence to Louis then turned to you. “What is it now?”

“What EXACTLY does the cupcake spell do?” you asked as you looked at the cat in the basket.

Oliver looked between the two of you then sighed. “Well, you’re bound to find out eventually. The spell creates an illusion to humans, kind of like how we hide it the light. Your illusion though makes it seems like you’re a cat.”

You stare at him with a face full of confusion. You quickly took out a pocket mirror from your purse and opened it. You stared at the mirror with horror as a [choice cat breed] stared back at you. She had your color eyes and a pink and blue striped ribbon around her neck that tied into a bow on the back. This must be the reason Lin was acting weird around you.

“Please don’t freak out, we don’t need to make a scene in the store. Besides, you only look that way to your eyes, and any other human who’s seen you. Everyone else sees how you actually look. Our eyes can see though any illusion; we only use the spell for the other humans, and to bind you to us.”

“So wait, you mean to say that every cat (and few dogs) around here that is with someone, is human?”

“Yep. So if you’re curious as to how many people here is one of us, look for that. Almost everyone here has a pet.”

You reach over and pick up the cat from Louis’ basket. “So th-this, right here, is a man?” the cat in question began to purr and rub his face against yours. His fur felt like smooth skin instead of what you expected a cat to feel like.

“’ow cute, ‘e likes you.” Louis smiled as he took back the white ball of fluff, cradling it in his arms.

“You may notice that isn’t very effective to you, but that’s because you are under the same spell. It’s weaker to you. To a regular person, the spell tricks their brain into the entire illusion of you and this man being a cat. Brilliant isn’t it?” Oliver told you.

For the whole rest of the time you two spent in the store you remained quiet. Once you were done with shopping, you waited patiently as Oliver loaded up the back of the moped with groceries. You stared at the shadow of the pink vehicle to see Oliver’s blue tail in the darkness. You watched a minute then reached out, grabbed it and gave it a good yank, earning a yelp from Oliver.

“Whoa! Geez, kinky…” he grumbled as he rubbed his rump.

“I’m not kinky; I just think your reaction is funny. I wanted to ask about the spell again.” You told him.

“Um, okay shoot.”

“What decides what animal people see? Is it the owner?”

“Of course. That’s another reason business is so good for me.”

“So are you basically the witch doctor of your kind?”

“Ha ha, pretty much. My family was quite brilliant. They experimented endlessly with different elements, and undiscovered plants and animals in order to gain such spell, and then they wrote down all their recipes. I now have the book they wrote them in.”

“Is the cupcake spell in there as well?”

“Absolutely, but don’t even think of trying to find the cure in there, mum discovered the recipe and never felt the need to look for a cure.”

“So basically you’re telling me to give up hope?”

“Exactly, now hop on poppet, let’s go home.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~time skiperoo!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You followed Oliver up to the front door of his house then through the door. When inside you saw it was still dark, and the black haired Asian creature sat on the bright pink couch with a white cat in his arms. The cat had a black tip on its tail and two pink flowers on both sides of its head. She purred contently as Chiku stroked her.
“It went well I see.” Oliver smiled.
“She is actually quite cheerful about it as well. I explained everything to her and she was rather happy to hear that we were now connected.” Chiku smiled with some sharp teeth showing.
“I-is that…Lin?” you asked, now staring at the cat. Your question was answered when she hopped off Chiku’s lap and wrapped her paws around your leg in a hug.
“Now now Lin, manners.” Chiku cooed as he picked her up. She nuzzled her face under his chin a licked his neck, which made him jump a little.
“I think you two will get along fine. Chiku, take good care of her. Oh by the way, you’re going to be at the festival, right?” Oliver asked.
“Of course, even if I wanted to miss it, my brother wouldn’t let me. He’s hosting it remember?” Chiku smiled. “Well, we should get out of your hair now, thank you greatly again. See you in a week.”
You watched the creature walk into the light and become human again, and then the door shut.
“Festival?” You ask Oliver.
“Oh yes, you will be coming with me! Our species always has a party in celebration of lasting this long undiscovered, and alive. It’s also one of the few nights of the year where we can rome around without fear of being caught!” he grinned.
“What about Halloween?”
“That’s the other night; generally there are only two times a year we can do this kind of thing. And actually, Halloween is more dangerous for us to bring our pets out.”
“I don’t need an explanation why…” you mumbled, looking over his strange form. You watched him rush around and put groceries away, then a thought came to mind. “Hey Ollie…”
“Uh-oh, you only call me that when you’re about to ask a question you’re afraid of the answer to.” he smiled. “Let’s hear it.”
“W-when looking through your cloths, I came across a bloody dress….”
“Watch your language love.”
“No, I mean it was BLOODY. You know, covered in blood.”
The fridge and the cupboard was both closed harshly (the fridge being slammed with his tail). A small smile was on his face, as if he just heard something pleasing. He turned to you with this expression and said “Never you mind ______, it would be best not to be heard. Let’s go to a happier note shall we? What do you want for dinner?”
“Oliver, please tell me.”
He ignored you. “Let’s see, I could whip up some scones, which would be lovely. Or how about I grill up some fish, or…”
You approached Oliver and put your hands on his shoulders. “Oliver, PLEASE tell me.” You say forcefully.
He looked at you unsure for a moment, then sighed. “Fine, if you must know, that belonged to my last pet. You could say our, heh, chemistry didn’t mix well. Meaning we didn’t get along. She was so meek and cute when I first met her, and I soon found I wanted her to be my own. Once the spell was cast, she was violent and mean. She hated me for what I did to her; she even attempted to kill me several times! You must understand that I am a very patient man (or beast, any way you like it I guess), and I put up with her for about two years, before I was about ready to pull my hair out.
“So it was Halloween night, and I found a lovely crowd of people who were maiming cats, as part of the Halloween tradition of the witch trials. I handed her to them. They were all humans so all they saw was a cat when looking at her. After she was viciously slaughtered, the spell broke, and her human form was reveled. I later collected the dress she was wearing as a reminder to myself.”
“A reminder of what?”  You asked nervously.
“A reminder of how proud yet desperate your kind is. They feel the need to prove their dominance in horribly ways, even though every creature alive knows your power, simply though what you create, not destroy.” He sighed. “I’m going to take a shower, holler if you need me.”
You watched him walk out of the room and into the dark hallway. You stood still in the kitchen and thought about your situation again. “Patient huh?” you sighed. “He kept a girl who wanted to take his life for two years…” you admittedly didn’t hate Oliver. True you were annoyed with some of his ways of doing things, and how he would win dominance over you so easily, but at the same time he was really nice. You disobeyed him multiple times, and he shrugged away almost all of them.
You looked back in his direction a minute and sighed. “Well, if there really is no way out of this, then I could at least try to get along with him. He really doesn’t ask for much either. He does like my blood a little too much for my comfort zone, but he never takes much.” You looked at the bandage on your thumb. “And he does take care of it afterword’s…” you sigh.
“Fine, I’ll be this guys pet. But he better still treat me with a little respect, and not like a stray dog…”
